Check and Clear the Flue

One of the most common problems that cause fireplaces to work poorly, is that the flue is blocked or obstructed. This can be caused by excess soot and dirt. There is also a chance that during the summer months, when you are not using the fireplace, birds may make a nest in there and in turn, prevent proper airflow.

Remove Ash from Previous Fires

To keep a clean and well-maintained fireplace, you must be sure to empty the fireplace of the ash from previous fires. Ensure you use a metal shovel and dispose of the ash in a metal rubbish bin. Alternatively, you can add it to your garden soil or compost!

Cleaning the Firebox

After emptying the firebox of excess ash, mix a bucket of dishwashing liquid, salt, vinegar, and water. Using a stiff-bristled scrubbing brush, loosen the soot from the sides of the walls and base of the firebox. Then, use a sponge to remove the loosened soot. Continue doing this until the firebox is clean.
